Tim McGraw’s Song “Take Me Away From Here” Expresses the Feelings of the Missing Generation

I am not the biggest country fan in the world. I grew up despising country but have grown to like a select few country singers over the last 10 years or so. One singer I do enjoy listening to is Tim McGraw. I was listening to “Take Me Away from Here” and what I heard in that song was the desires of countless twenty somethings in today’s world. Listen to this song or read the lyrics and you will find someone who wants to escape. They feel trapped and they want someone to be able to lift them out of the mess they are in and take them to a better place where they can be more fulfilled. As Christians we know the answer to this dilemma but I think the song expresses the sentiment of this generation so well.

Do you think this song mirrors the desires of many young people? What other songs come to mind that do the same thing?

My body burns like there’s a desert deep in me
A thirsty soul so unsatisfied
But there you are like a river to the sea
The one chance I have to change my life

Darlin’, take me away from here
Make it seem like we’re a million miles away
Another time, another place

Make me a different man
Move me farther than I’ve ever been before
Show me that there’s something more

Sometimes I feel like I’m trapped inside myself
Spinning wheels up and down, round and round
Going nowhere just like everybody else
With no touch, no sight, no sound

But you could take me away from here
Make it seem like we’re a million miles away
Another time, another place

Make me a different man
Move me farther than I’ve ever been before
Show me that there’s somethin’ more

Give me hopes and dreams to fill my head
Push my heart so I can fly again

Take me away from here
Make it seem like we’re a million miles away
Another time, another place

Make me a different man
Move me farther than I’ve ever been before
Show me that there’s something more

Take me away from here
Take me away from here
Take me away from here

  1. I think of Weezer’s “Pork and Beans”

  2. Interesting insight. Is the guy in the song wrapped up in himself? Is he looking for “super-sex” to take him away? Or is he looking deeper? One thing that does come through: he is looking for fulfillment in a relationship.
