The Old Testament was actually written in two distinct types of writing/scripts - one older and one much newer. The Samaritans continued on the tradition of keeping the Torah written in the older text type even when other Jews transitioned to the newer. According to Wurthwein they viewed the newer text types as “a flagrant [...]

I appreciate Margaret Manning of Ravi Zacharias ministries for pointing me in the direction of this blog. There are some lengthy posts and discussions of various components of Oprah and Tolle’s New Earth spirituality. I found it very interesting and helpful. Here is the link.
I also wanted to mention some audio from Ben Witherington on [...]

I always thought the fact that the NIV has 49 blank verses just made it easier to win a memory verse competition by saying, “Matthew 23:14″ then pausing, “Mark 7:16″ then pausing, until you have quoted 49 memory verses without having to say a word. This website calls out the NIV based on the fact that various verses are no longer present. The claim is that the NIV deleted these verses with the conclusion that the NIV is not to be trusted. I appreciate their appeal to want a complete Bible, to not tamper with God’s word, and an understanding [...]

On the surface, translation issues don’t appear to be a very big deal and all else being equal, they really aren’t. But in some cases it can really go much further below the surface to a whole mindset that can be incredibly devastating. Most of this debate goes straight to the KJV vs. a [...]

Is it just me or does the TNIV appear to have sub-headings under some of the titles. I have only noticed this in the Old Testament and only in the minor prophets. Here is a very clear example:
Zephaniah 2:1
(View it here - http://www.tniv.info/pdf/TNIV_NewTestament.pdf on p.642)
Main Heading (bigger font) - “Judah and Jerusalem Judged Along With [...]

This is not just for people in ministry - if you are reading this I would love your input. I am interested in combinations of translations that you have found helpful for a particular application (for example I like to use the NIV and NRSV when studying a passage to get a more rounded view [...]
